My story is in the form.
From the materials I choose to work with to how the form lives with you…

Layered slip texture

My story begins 18 years ago in a night class for pottery.

I had long ago left being a Physical Therapist in Texas to become a full-time homeschooling mom in South Africa. A friend phoned up and invited me to throw some clay around, drink wine and say rude things for a night off.

That evening I started on the journey of so much of what I’d been looking for. Creative space, chemistry, research, play - lots of it, experimenting and a deep satisfying space to just be.

My forms are about finding a whimsy in grace. The joy of nature and growth in creating forms to elevate a mundane moment into one of beauty, curiosity and surprise. There is no one single clay I work with as I enjoy mixing and matching this base. A whisper to my joy of collaboration and community. The forms themselves are a conversation between myself and the clay, skill and intuition. I’m not to worried to make everything the same, symmetrical, mechanical. I attempt to allow space for each form, in it’s journey from clay ball to finished piece, to have a voice.

All glazes are made in my studio enjoying the chemistry and journey of experimentation with safety in mind. I prefer glazes that move, glow and lift the history of a forms making to the surface.

The work is ever-evolving as I journey with the clay in pursuit of forms that are as much about the joy they hold as they are to use.

The Studio Space.

The studio recently moved from a beautiful West Auckland space to a more grown-up commercial studio space replete with big roller door, kitchen and bathroom in Auckland’s North Shore. I have lots of light and plants and room to experiment. I have four electric wheels and one kick wheel. Lots of items on wheels for a flexible studio workspace, plus a slabroller table. And of course a good sized kiln for firing my work and yours.
